'Oak Leaf and Acorns' - ACEO sized still life oil painting by Matthew Allton

'Oak Leaf and Acorns'

This ACEO sized still life in oil paints, on Arches L'huile paper, was painted in August and measured approximately 3.5 x 2.5 inches.

I had collected some oak twigs on a walk and taken several photos of various arrangements of them, to work from whenever I could find the time to paint them.

'Padlock and Keys' - still life oil painting by Matthew Allton

'Padlock and Keys'

This still life in oil paints on Arches L'huile paper measured approximately 12 x 12 cms.

It was painted in July to replace stock on Etsy as sales on the site were going well lately.

However, friend Dawn saw it on Instagram and wanted to purchase it to go with the two prints of my work that she had previously bought.

Fastest selling painting ever!

'Nick 2' - Pencil sketch of life model Nick by Matthew Allton

'Nick 2'

After a practice pencil drawing of model Nick a month or so ago, I finally got around to tackling the pose that he was interested in me doing a pencil sketch of.

The sketch is on a sketch book page of approximately a4 size.

'Pencil sharpener' - ACEO sized still life oil painting by Matthew Allton

'Pencil sharpener'

Another mini ACEO sized still life in oil paints on Arches L'huile paper measuring only 3.5 x 2.5 inches. I picked a pencil sharpener as the subject for this latest mini still life. Its another one painted using real oil paints, rather than the water soluble ones that I have been using in recent years.

'Pencil sketch of male model' - Pencil sketch of a male model by Matthew Allton

'Pencil sketch of male model'

I wanted to do some practice drawings in pencil in April, as a model who posed for photos a while back had expressed an interest in commissioning a framed pencil sketch of one of his poses.

Pencil drawings aren't something I do often, but something I should do more regularly in one of the many sketch books that I have bought and never really used. Nothing better for keeping your eye in than regular sketching after all.

'Tiger Moth' - Oil sketch of a Tiger Moth by Matthew Allton

'Tiger Moth'

In March, having been concentrating more on trying to get to grips with digital painting I wanted to do something with real paints.

I decided to do a tiny ACEO sized painting of a tiger moth that I'd taken a photograph of a few years ago when it decided to come into the house for a flutter around

I used real oil paints again, rather than the usual water mixable oils that I'd been using over the last few years. Its on a tiny 3.5 x 2.5 inch piece of Arches L'huile paper.

'Natural Arch off Thurlestone Sands' - Digital seascape painting by Matthew Allton

'Natural Arch off Thurlestone Sands'

In February, I continued to try to learn to use my graphics tablet and laptop for creation of digital art.

This is an unusual subject for me these days, but I quite like the overall atmosphere of it. I am reminded of the sunny day when I took the photo a few years ago when friend Steve and I were doing a week long section of South West Coast Way on a walking holiday.

'Portrait of a male model' - Digital sketch of a male model by Matthew Allton

'Portrait of male model' - Digital sketch

Still trying to learn to use my xpen deco 01 graphics tablet when I get the chance.

Likeness is half there on this one and I think the lighting is quite successful.

'Sea Shell' - ACEO Still life oil sketch of a Sea Shell by Matthew Allton

'Sea Shell'

In January, I decided to do a tiny ACEO oil sketch of a sea shell that a friend had bought me back from a beach in Florida

Mark had bought me a set of Daler Rowney Graduate oil paints for xmas. I have been using water mixable oils for a number of years now, so it was a bit of a learning curve. Different texture, opacity etc etc to get used to again
