'Charlie' - pencil sketch of rainbow budgie by Matthew Allton

'Charlie' - Pencil sketch of our pet rainbow budgie

I have recently been meeting up more regularly again with my friend John, and with him being an artist too, a fairly lapsed one like me, we have decided to spur each other on in our artisitic endeavours by setting challenges to complete before we meet up again.

For this challenge we were both to create something around a bird theme so this was a quick pencil sketch of 'Charlie', done on 18th August 2019, in a new 'leatherette' bound sketch book that I bought for the purpose of sketching more regularly, as they were being sold off cheap in WHSmith.

'Paint tube'- digital painting by Matthew Allton

'Paint tube' - Digital painting

Years ago I had bought a small Bambu graphics tablet and hadn't got very far with it.

Work colleague Heather has set herself the task of becoming more proficient at digital painting this year and after seeing a few of her first efforts I was inspired to give it a go again.

After investigating the cost and some reviews of more up to date and larger graphics tablets than my previous Bambu, I thought I would treat myself and invested in an X-Pen Deco 01.

This was my second try at a digital painting using my new X-Pen Deco 01 graphics tablet.

Quite pleased with this impressionistic little sketch.

Far from perfect but certainly gives the impression of light on the tube nicely.... I will keep persevering.

'Marbles' Still life oil painting of glass marbles by Matthew Allton

'Marbles'

This tiny still life oil painting is executed using water mixable oil paints on a small piece of Arches L'huile paper measuring just 3.5 x 2.5 inches.

I hope it will serve as an ACEO study for a slightly larger painting of more marbles in the near future, though my recent work has been very small anyway.

It was painted in one sitting on the 3rd February 2019.
