'Brimham Rocks'

Small A5 sized, gouache sketch done in October of 2023.

I used a reference photo taken on a drizzly day visit to Brimham Rocks in Yorkshire while on holiday with a friend. I did the sketch on an even wetter day sheltering from the rain in the holiday cottage for the day!

'Horse Chestnuts'

Another small oil painting sketch, completed while on my first ever painting holiday up on the Furness Peninsula near Aldingham.

I collected the horse chestnuts and leaves on my way back from the central lakes, but took a photo of them to use as reference for painting in the evening.

Its executed in oil paints, and is painted on Arches Huile paper measuring approximately 19 x 14 cms.

'Ingleborough From Aldingham Beach'

Another Small oil painting sketch, completed while on my first ever painting holiday up on the Furness Peninsula near Aldingham.

I used a reference photo taken on a walk along the beach in front of the Shepherd's hut where I was staying, that morning.

Its executed in oil paints, on Arches Huile paper measuring 17 x 12 cms.

'The Duddon Valley'

An oil painting sketch, completed while on my first ever painting holiday up on the Furness Peninsula near Aldingham.

I had planned to paint en plein air more, but the weather was very windy and rainy most of the week. So on a rare drier day, I took a drive up the Duddon Valley into the Central Lake District to take some photos as reference to paint in the dry of the Shepherd's Hut where I was staying.

This painting is executed in oil paints, on Arches Huile paper measuring 29 x 20 cms.

Unusually, I used a reference photo that a friend sent me while on holiday in Christchurch area, though I altered it quite a bit to create this painting.

I used a reference photo that I took during a photoshoot of friend Kevin a good few years ago, so thanks to him for posing! Its good to be finally using the reference photos from back then!

This gouache sketch was created on A4 Daler Rowney Aquafine watercolour paper in September 2023.

I used a reference photo that I took while doing the first day of walking along The National Forest long distance footpath with a friend.

'Greek Bust'

This coloured pencil sketch was created on coloured A4 paper in early September 2023.

I used a reference photo that I took while at the British Museum with a friend. It was an experiment in using coloured pencils, which I've never really used, and using a midtone ground to add highlights and shadows to indicate form.

This gouache portrait was painted on A4 Daler Rowney Aquafine paper in August 2023.

Unusally, I used a reference photo of someone else's from Instagram or Pinterest. I usually only use my own reference photos for creating my work.

This gouache painting was executed on A4 Daler Rowney Aquafine paper. Very unusually it was done in two sittings! It was begun in March 2023 and finished in August 2023.

The reference for this painting came from a set of photos I took of a model a few years ago.

This was the second sketch done from the youtube video of timed poses used in the previous sketch.

The reference for this drawing came from a youtube video of timed poses, though I paused the video rather than use the actual time suggested in the video!

I was trying to improve capturing a likeness rather than working on speed at this point.
